Operetta festival in the heart of the Salzkammergut tourist region

In memory of the composer Franz Lehár, who spent a significant part of his life in Bad Ischl and preferred to stay at the Goldener Ochs, the renowned operetta festival called the Bad Ischl Lehár Festival has been taking place in the heart of the Salzkammergut tourist region since 2004. During the summer months famous operetta classics are performed at the Kongress- und Theaterhaus in the centre of the imperial town.

Franz Lehár and his Bad Ischl

The Salzkammergut tourist region and Bad Ischl weren't just an inspiration and home at the same time to the celebrated composer Franz Lehár. Music greats such as Johannes Brahms, Anton Bruckner, Giacomo Meyerbeer, Oscar Strauß, Johann Strauß Sohn, Anton von Webern and many other musical geniuses lived and worked in the imperial town. It was the composers' opinion that the operetta and the sophisticated spa town of Bad Ischl were made for each other. Villas like those belonging to Franz Lehár, Oskar Strauss and Richard Tauber are evidence of the appeal that Bad Ischl has always held for creative people.

Franz Lehár - the operetta composer

The Austrian composer of Hungarian origin Franz Lehár finally secured a top position among the operetta composers of that time with the international success of the operetta "The Merry Widow". Other successful pieces soon followed, for example "The Count of Luxembourg". Privately he was very close friends with Giacomo Puccini and liked being inspired by the fascinating scenery of the Salzkammergut tourist region. Franz Lehár was one of the numerous artists who had chosen the little imperial town as their favourite summer residence. During this life, Bad Ischl and the Salzkammergut tourist region were a real Mecca of modern art back then: the elite from the Empire met here to be inspired by the idyllic town of Bad Ischl.

Besides operettas, Franz Lehár also wrote two symphonic poems, two violin concerts, film music, songs, dances and marches. He bequeathed his beloved villa in Bad Ischl, which houses the Lehár Museum today, to the imperial town. Lehár together with Oscar Strauss and Leo Fall were considered to be the founders of the Silver Operetta Era.

The classical music festival in Bad Ischl

Today the town in the Salzkammergut tourist region honours the composer, who died in Bad Ischl, with a very special classical music festival: The Franz Lehár Festival takes place every year. Operettas by Franz Lehár and his contemporaries are then performed in Bad Ischl's grand historical buildings.
