Cross-country skiing in the Salzkammergut tourist region

On holiday at the Goldener Ochs you enjoy the close proximity to extremely well prepared cross-country trails in the Salzkammergut tourist region. Whether you're an old cross-country skiing pro or want to try this sport out for the first time – Bad Ischl offers the perfect conditions for any level.

Classic & skating: it all comes down to the right technique

Cross-country skiing is one of the most popular winter sports in the Salzkammergut tourist and sports region in particular. More than 100 kilometres of trails await you around Bad Ischl and the Goldener Ochs. In addition to a choice of trails, you can also choose the technique.

While the classic technique requires a calmer skiing style, where one ski after another is alternately pushed out in a straight line in front of the body and the opposite pole is inserted at the same time, the skating technique demands a bit more effort. Skating is faster and works out other muscles.

There are also different varieties among the skating techniques, basically though they all involve a diagonally gaping leg position where the skis are alternately moved outwards in a V shape. The poles are used at the same time, staggered or not at all, usually though to push off with both poles. With the diagonal skating technique you get up slopes quicker, the leading arm technique is suitable for difficult terrain and you can ski safely down slopes in one act.

The most popular cross-country skiing trails around Bad Ischl are

  • Kaltenbach trail (15 km)
  • Sulzbachfelder trail (8 km)
  • Pfandler-Golf trail (8 km)
  • Rettenbachalm trail (8 km)

Rettenbachalm cross-country skiing paradise

The Rettenbachalm cross-country skiing paradise is situated very close to the Goldener Ochs. It stands out due to the magical ambience of the Salzkammergut tourist region's once largest spring grazing pasture. Guaranteed snow ensures cross-country skiing fun on superbly prepared classic and skating trails until well into spring.
