The custom of bird catchers
Local forest birds in the Salzkammergut tourist region
The tradition of bird catching in the Salzkammergut tourist region includes the catching of individual local forest birds in the autumn, bird keeping outside the fowling season in aviaries and the forest bird exhibition on the Sunday before St. Catherine's Day (25 November) where the most beautiful birds are awarded for their colour, intactness and perfect condition. The birds are supplied with local feed collected throughout the year. In spring the birds, except the decoys, are released into the wild again.
Bird catchers in the Salzkammergut tourist region
Bird catching has a history spanning centuries in the Salzkammergut tourist region and it is also still practised today. On the weekend around 24 November, the most beautiful birds from the 32 associations in the Salzkammergut tourist region were exhibited and awarded again.
The history of bird catchers
Bird catching is also reflected in other local traditions. For example, there are figures to do with bird catching in the Salzkammergut's Christmas nativity scenes and stories and incidents about bird catchers are also documented in the region's songs and poems. Knowledge about the birds' behaviour was collected and passed down over centuries and generations.
Exhibition at the Kongress & TheaterHaus Bad Ischl
